Description

This rosewood flute stamped "J. M. Rose" comprises three sections, with the lower body and foot joint constructed as a single piece. Eight silver keys feature slim keytouches and shanks mounted on blocks, with flat round keyheads; the low C♯ and C pads are riveted to their respective keyheads. Three ivory ferrules and an ivory cap embellish the instrument, which lacks a tuning slide but incorporates a graduated ivory screw-stopper. The embouchure hole is slightly oval, and the low C and C♯ touches overlap. Construction features a socket at the top of the upper body and tenon on the head. Several springs have been replaced and roughly soldered to keytouches, and the lowest keyflap was replaced by Daniel Bangham in 2002. The flute is estimated to date between 1816 and 1821.
